We had the chance to visit Bridges Outreach and hear from CPO Travis Taflinger—a leader who’s been in it for the long haul.
At just 20 years old, Travis started volunteering at an elementary school in Chicago and saw some tough realities up close. That experience sparked something in him. From working at a Boys & Girls Club in one of the hardest environments—where kids told him, “this is better than home”—to now leading Bridges, his focus has always been about showing up and staying present.
Bridges doesn’t wait for kids to come to them. “We go to the kids. There’s nothing wrong with meeting people on their turf.” Each day Bridges is built around structure, support, and connection. Whether it’s sharing a meal, learning a life skill, getting help with schoolwork, or engaging in something active, the focus is always on creating consistent, meaningful moments with the students they serve.
We also learned about Bridges Homes, where they've fixed up and sold 13 houses to support their mission. As a nonprofit, every dollar they earn goes right back into helping people. No fluff. Just impact.
When asked how he plans it all out, Travis said it best:
“I don’t really plan too far ahead—I just pray a lot and try to follow God as much as possible.”
